Dr. John Grady-Benson was born and raised in the Chicago area. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude, from Brown University in 1981. He was the president of his freshman medical school class at Northwestern University in Chicago and graduated in 1985. He did his internship in general surgery at Hartford Hospital, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Connecticut. He did a fellowship in joint replacement surgery and adult reconstruction at the Scripps Institute in San Diego, California. He started his professional orthopedic career at the University of Michigan, where he was the chief of the joint replacement service from 1991 to 1995. He returned to San Diego for one year in 1995, prior to joining Orthopedic Associates of Hartford and the clinical faculty at the University of Connecticut, in 1996. Dr. Grady-Benson was recognized as the "Teacher of the Year" by orthopedic residents in training at all three institutions: the University of Michigan, 1994; the University of California San Diego, 1995; the University of Connecticut, 2004.

Dr. Grady-Benson has had extensive experience in orthopedic trauma surgery and adult reconstruction surgery. His primary interest now is in joint replacement of the hip and knee. Dr. Grady-Benson performs approximately 500 hip and knee replacements annually. He feels privileged to be an expert in surgeries that can alleviate the crippling pain of arthritis and transform patients with significant orthopedic disabilities in order that they may lead active and functional lives.

Dr. Grady-Benson has a strong affiliation with Hartford Hospital, where he was co-director of the joint replacement service until 2007. Presently, he performs joint replacement at the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute (CJRI), which is becoming one of the national leaders in joint replacement. At the CJRI, patients experience a focused approach to wellness after joint replacement surgery, where all of the employees are experienced in providing patient-centered care for joint replacement surgery. Dr. Grady-Benson is actively participating in some of the research objectives at the CJRI, in order to improve joint replacement outcomes for all patients now and in years to come. The CJRI is proud to have achieved a national grant to participate in a national Joint Replacement Registry (called F.O.R.C.E.), a crucial program that will improve quality of care delivered to joint replacement patients now and in the future.

Dr. Grady-Benson makes every effort to provide the most up to date care and treatment of patients with arthritic disease. "I strongly believe the procedure should match the patient," he says. "I try to provide the information the patients need to make the best, most informed decision to optimize their quality of life. I work tirelessly to provide quality care in a compassionate, caring environment."

The "Grady-Benson Team" includes three key members. Michael Cremins, Ph.D, PA-C, is a highly experienced Physician Assistant who has worked with Dr. Grady-Benson since 2002. Dr. Cremins is an expert in the field of orthopedic medicine and achieved his Ph.D. in epidemiology. He often evaluates new patients, but also assists in joint replacement procedures, and is actively involved in care in and out of the hospital. Anna Molesky, R.N., has extensive experience in orthopedic surgical nursing, and now coordinates preoperative and postoperative care for many of Dr. Grady-Benson's patients. Anna is a wealth of information and helps patients safely and successfully prepare and recover from joint replacement surgery. Kathy Heerz is Dr. Grady-Benson's Medical Executive Assistant. Kathy is the key coordinator for the entire Team, and handles the difficult task of coordinating patients schedules and appointments with devotion and efficiency.
