What insurance do you accept?

We participate with the following HMO and PPO organizations:

  • ConnectiCare (unless you purchased it on the Connecticut Exchange)

We also participate with most Workers’ Compensation PPOs. We are currently out of network with Harvard Pilgrim and Multiplan PHCS.

The only Connecticut Marketplace (Exchange) product we participate with is Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. We do not participate with ConnectiCare's Exchange product.

Why is it important to update my insurance information?

It is important to update our office of any insurance changes that could impact your coverage. This is especially important if you are scheduled for surgery, and could affect your authorization for coverage. Please call your physician’s office and update them with any changes.

What is OAH’s financial policy?

Patients are expected to understand their health insurance that is in effect at the time of appointment. Most insurance plans now have a co-pay and many are high deductible plans. Payment is expected at the time of service.

Payment may be made by cash, check, money order, MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express. OAH will expect outstanding balances to be paid prior to follow- up appointments.

What is included when billed for fracture care?

Our insurance companies require us to report our services with specific codes. Fracture care refers to treatment from the initial casting or splint of a fracture, as well as 90 days of normal, uncomplicated follow-up care. Even if you have a fracture that does not require a splint or cast, you will be billed for fracture care since your orthopedic surgeon is responsible for ensuring that you heal properly.

Services not included in the fee for fractures that are billed separately include:

  • Evaluation and management services to diagnose the fracture
  • X-rays, initial and follow-up
  • All casting and splinting supplies, including those used in first cast or splint
  • Replacement cast application for medical necessity
  • Treatment of complications requiring a return to the OR

There will be a separate charge for these and any other appropriate co-payments, deductibles, or coinsurance that may apply, according to your insurance benefit policy. Please note that cast replacements that are not medically necessary may be denied by your insurance company and may be billed to you, the patient or guarantor of the service.

Why do I see two charges for an injection?

When you receive an injection, you will be billed for the charge of administering the injection and the cost of the drug that is used.

If I have 1 surgery, why do I get 3 bills?

When you undergo a surgical procedure at one of our surgical centers or the hospital, you will receive three bills to cover the costs of:

  • Services provided by our orthopedic surgeon(s) and team
  • Facility where the procedure is performed
  • Anesthesiologist

Please note that only the services provided by your orthopedic surgeon or by physical therapy can be paid on this site.

How do I pay my bill?

How will I know the costs of surgery?

At OAH, we want to help you understand the potential costs of surgery so that there are no surprises related to your upcoming surgery. If you have been scheduled for surgery, our surgical estimator will contact your insurance carrier, determine your coverage, and will contact you and verify your insurance, discuss out of pocket expenses, and make payment arrangements.

  • If we have a contract with your insurance provider, we will collect any co-pays, deductibles, or coinsurance prior to your surgery. We will also contact your insurance carrier and ensure the surgery is authorized.
  • If we do not participate with your insurance provider, we will collect payment in advance of your surgery. If payment is not received in advance, your surgeon may choose to reschedule the surgery.

Our surgical estimator will ensure that you have all the information you need in advance of your scheduled surgery and can assist you with financial questions or concerns.

Is there a cost for medical equipment?

During a visit, you may be provided with a splint, orthotic, brace, or other piece of medical equipment to facilitate your recovery. There is a cost for this medical equipment, which may or may not be covered by insurance. Some plans will cover the costs of durable medical equipment or may have a certain deductible.

What are your office hours?

We are open between 8:30AM and 4:30PM on Monday through Friday. During regular business hours, please call our main number so our staff can assist you. Our highly trained staff should be able to address your questions or route them to the necessary resources.

What if I need emergency orthopedic care during normal business hours?

The on-call orthopedic surgeon at OAH offers same-day appointments for urgent and acute injuries. Please call the office at (860) 549-3210 and/or (860) 244-8888 between 8:30AM and 4:30PM Monday through Friday and asked to be directed to the physician on call.

Who do I call after hours?

We have coverage 7 days a week, 24 hours a day for emergencies. If you call after business hours, our answering service will take your call and will page the on-call physician, if needed.

What if I need urgent care?

We offer two urgent care centers in Farmington and Glastonbury to handle acute orthopedic injuries that occur on nights or weekends.

  • Urgent care is open 4:30PM to 8:00PM Monday through Friday and Saturday/Sunday from 9:00AM to 1:00PM. No appointment is necessary.

For serious or life-threatening emergencies, call 911 or go to the emergency room.

Why not go to a regular urgent care clinic?

Sprains, fractures, and sports injuries are among the most common reasons for urgent care visits. While many clinics offer urgent care, Orthopedic Associates of Hartford provides urgent care fully dedicated to acute orthopedic injuries. We are staffed with the leading orthopedic experts in their fields and orthopedics is all that we do. We provide on-site x-ray and casting at our site and will ensure that you have the necessary follow-up care.

What if I need follow-up care?

One of the benefits of receiving urgent care at our centers is that we ensure priority follow-up with one of our 50+ orthopedic specialists. They will be aware of your issues, have your most current x-rays, and can work with you on developing a plan of care, which may entail surgery, follow-up visits, or physical therapy.

When should I seek hospital care?

Our urgent care centers are intended to treat medical conditions that need prompt attention, but are not life threatening. Extreme orthopedic injuries, such as open fractures, deep lacerations, head trauma, excessive bleeding, or conditions coupled with life-threatening symptoms, are more effectively treated at a hospital as soon as possible. Please always call 911 for these types of conditions if you are unsure about the seriousness of any injury that could be life threatening.

Can I walk in or do I need to make an appointment for these extended hours?

This is typically a walk-in clinic, as appointment times that might be offered cannot be guaranteed based on the nature of the clinic and the severity of injuries received at the time of arrival.

What insurance plans are accepted?

Orthopedic Associates accepts MOST major insurance plans. If you are unsure, please contact your provider representative that is typically provided on the back of your insurance card. 

What is the co-pay for urgent care? Is it due at my visit?

Orthopedic Associates of Hartford will charge the same co-pay as a normal doctor’s visit to a specialist and it is due at the time of visit. This is generally less expensive than the emergency room visit co-pay. Patients without insurance will need to pay $250 in cash or credit card prior to being treated at the OAH Urgent Care Centers.

Who are the healthcare professionals staffing the Urgent Care Centers?

The Centers are staffed by orthopedic surgeons and advanced practitioners (physicians’ assistants and APRNs) as determined by our scheduling. There is always an orthopedic surgeon available as back-up during these hours when one is not specifically assigned. There will be x-ray personnel and administrative support as well to help facilitate you through the UCC in the most efficient manner possible.

What if I don’t require same-day care?

Please direct all conditions not requiring same-day medical attention to the main office of Orthopedic Associates of Hartford at (860) 549-3210 for the Greater Hartford locations, or (860) 223-8553 for the Plainville/Newington locations.
